Piovono Eberline E-600 ?

Come mai ?

.

Peccato, in genere Eberline ha sempre fatto ottimi strumenti.

Forse, questa volta, ha fatto pipì fuori !

Ciao a tutti

Ho acquistato un paio di questi E600.
Effettivamente sono un pò vissuti.
Lo schermo presenta varie rigature e segni dovuti all'uso.

E600 programming cable bypassing
Posted by: [email protected]

A while back I acquired an Eberline E600 in very nice condition. One thing I didn't realize was the cost of the required cables I would need to program the unit and the Smart Probe cable and SmartPak I would need just to hook a probe to the Scaler. Well there isn't much I can do about the Smart Probe cable, but I deceided to circumvent the Smart Programming cable. I took a three foot CAT 5 network cable, cut it in half, opened up the E600 soldered one end of the CAT 5 cable in parallel with the seven wires that the E600 uses to communicate via the serial world. I routed the cable into the battery compartment so that I could hook a usb to serial adapter to the CAT 5 end. Installed the usb to serial adapter software and it worked!! I've included pictures to better describe what I did. Oh, and I almost forgot, the Eberline E600 communications program requires a 32 bit operating system so it can run the Eberline software and mine is a 64 bit system so I install a 32 bit Windows in a Virtual window so the WINE600 software would install, that was even more fun. Any questions just ask.

First, I am not affiliated with this seller in any way. I purchased one of these units which will arrive in a few days and I will report on the quality and operability of the unit.
This seller has listed quite a few E600 units at an incredible price. I made him an offer below the $250 that he has listed and he accepted. If you have an E600 with the necessary accessories this might be a good opportunity to get a backup unit on the cheap.
The E600 is a pretty incredible unit but usually very expensive (Normally priced over $1000 just for the unit on epay). These units appear to be sans any cords/smart probes. That means if you don't already have them, plan on investing a few hundred dollars.
These units settings are changed by software that GEO has uploaded to the site for us. You will need a cable to connect the unit to your pc, I recently bought one from Thermo-Fisher new and it was under $150 with shipping included.

Additionally your going to need the probe cable, this is a little more pricey. There is the original probe cord, which only works with eberline smart probes (which are expensive and hard to find). There is also a SmartPAK adapter that allows the unit to be paired with normal "dumb" probes. These cords are hard to find and will likely cost you a few hundred. I know there is someone who is selling a bunch of smartPAK cables with various adapters for $140 (a very fair price I think) .Eberline E-600 Portable Radiation Monitor. E-600 vs 2221

Both are masterpieces but with very different philosophies of use.

The 2221 is totally manual, loaded with knobs, buttons and adjustments as well as an analog meter plus a digital readout, must be set up for each probe, reports only what the probe does (CPM). Any dose-rate interpolation is done on the dial scale, if present at all. It is big and very heavy. Too heavy to use in the field for long periods of time. It has just about every feature that the old-school Ludlum meters ever had, all in one box. No RS-232, data logging or anything like that at all. The 2221 is the ultimate Scientist/TECHNICIAN's metering system. The 2221 is still current production and should be maintainable with full factory support and parts for the foreseeable future.

On the other hand, the E-600 is the perfect Health Physics-OPERATOR's metering system. It does everything for you and is heavily weighted towards calculated dose-rate. The readout is modified by the program to reflect the probe's response curve, but as we all know now, that response is different for different isotopes. The smart probes do automatically reprogram the CPM to mR/H conversion formula for each probe, but this is only valid for Cs-137. Regular probes can be used but require a smart probe cable. This meter is made to be set up by a technician then handed off to an operator.
Eberline company is no more, factory support and parts are nil.

Manuals for both are in our archives as is the available programs for the E-600.
---------
I was fortunate enough to get my hands on some new toys, one of which was an Eberline E600 which I had been drooling over for a while.
I've been very interested to compare the E600 with the Ludlum Model 2221, does anyone have any experience with either of those detectors?
I'm also considering getting the smart cable cable - in order to use a larger number of my probes with the E600. Does anyone have any feedback on these smart cables?
